Itching & scratching

  • dental concerns

My 1 1/2 year old cat went to the vet for a teeth cleaning this morning after at her routine yearly exam it was discovered she had excessive tartar and plaque build up. A few minutes ago, the vet called to advise me to test for the feline leukemia virus as this may be a sign of the virus. Is this probable? What else may cause tartar buildup in such a young cat? She is playful, eats well, and no other signs of any diseases, does have some signs of crust around her nose though as if a runny nose. I have 3 other cats that are all 5 months older than her, and all indoor cats. Any advice? I'm going crazy waiting for the test results and her phone call!

  • Bleeding cat

Hi, I am quite worried about my cat and would appreciate any help you could provide. We noticed her wheezing and found drops of blood where she had been sitting. Upon inspection, we realised the blood had come from her nose. We took her to the vets, who said she had an ear infection with small polyps inside them. They gave her a steroid injection and some ear drops for us to put in. We have done this and her ears they say are better. However, her occasional wheezing has returned and there has once more been blood from her nose. We believe the return of these two symptoms came as the steroid injection was due to wear off. We have a further appointment in...

  • My 94 year old mother adopted a rescue dog (Rosie) about a month ago. She scratches constantly and sometimes whimpers when she scratches. I took her for a check up and the vet found no fleas, etc. There are no obvious spots to check for mange. I was told to give her Benadryl to see if it helped. It did not. We had a prescription for Paramite from an earlier dog and I dipped her with that solution. Unfortunately I have lost the directions except to use 1 oz. with 1 gallon of water and sponge onto the entire body. How long do I need to wait before I dip her again? How many times should I expect to dip her before I can stop? Do you have other suggestions?

  • Cracked bleeding nose

First off thank you for offering this service. Pepper has a very dry cracked nose that is bleeding a couple times a day for the last week I am unable to get him to the vet at this moment but intend to ASAP. He was given medication last summer at a emergency hospital for the same condition they seemed to think by the looks of it was a auto immune disease the meds cured him for awhile but never cured the dryness of his nose which I was told to put KY jelly on to keep moist the last 2 weeks his nose has been terrible it bleeds and is sore and cracked he is contantly licking it which makes it worse I have him on 3 benedryl every 5 to 6 hours ( 100lb dog) it helps with the...

  • scratching ears

I previously wrote about this sweet little cat and her resistance to a new kitten brought into the house; after three months of living on the kitchen table she went to live with my son who pays her a lot of attention but who is gone a lot during the day. After a couple of months she has suddenly started scratching her ears so much that some of the fur has come off. She is also displaying some other new behaviors--chasing her tail, spooking herself, etc. I know the ear scratching might be due to ear mites, but is this possibly a symptom of a cat being left alone too much? She LOVES people (but isn’t so happy with other cats). We saw similar behavior when we first...

  • Dog has sores on ears

Hello, our Maltipoo has just healed from what the vet diagnosed as him having an allegic reaction to some new treats he ate that had carob in them. He had red sores in the outer-inside of his ears. We treated him with prescribed antibiotic drops for about 10 days. They went away. One week and a half has passed and now we have noticed on the inside tips of his ears there are a cluster of what looks like dried-blood color(black-brown)hard to the touch sores?? They are quite thick. I don't want to take him in for another expensive exanmination to be told it's nothing and they'll go away on their own. However obviously I also don't want these to worsen and turn into...
