  • Itchy Rats

We have two rats, brothers from the same litter. One is a typical hooded rat and the other is a dumbo. They are just over three years old and have recently been experiencing hair loss and chronic itching. There are no pustules, bumps or swelling; the skin is only slightly irritated due to their scratching. We use shredded paper for their bedding. The hair loss is rather sporadic: under their throats, up their front legs, along their backs. We're not sure if the hair loss is because of their scratching or if there is an underlying factor. We have recently moved into a smoking household and are concerned whether or not the residual smoke could be the cause, or if it could...

  • rat symptoms

Both my rats have developed symptoms of disequilibrium, like a weakness on one side and something wrong with one of their eyes. At first it was my smaller one & I thought she had a stroke; now my other, larger rat is showing the same signs. they get only rat food to eat. does this sound like something you have heard of before?

I got smarty a couple moths ago and she seemed to be sneezing a lot, but she was acting perfectly normal and it sort of went away. Now shes barely moving and having a hard time eating. She's cold and stiff. She also has a little bit of what looks like blood coming out of her bottom. Whats wrong with her and what should I do?

  • Rat loss of balance

I have a dumbo rat who is about a year and a half roughly at the most. Recently he has been losing his balance a lot, he cant stand and hold food by himself anymore, I have to give him it or he eats it from the ground. When he washes he rools over as if he is doing a somersault. He seems to have lost a bit of strength in his tail and feet and now slightly waddles when he walks. Also his skin is flaking a bit all over his body I have tried to give him more moist foods in his diet along with his rat nuggets to make sure he is getting enough liquid but im concerned about him he seems to have lost a bit of weight as well even though he hasnt stopped eating please help.

  • Large growing mass

My rat has recently developed a mass of some kind on the top of his head. About a week ago it was half the size it is now. He seems to be acting the same as he usually does, with no difference in his eating or drinking habits. What is this mass, and what can I do about it?

  • Difficulty breathing

Our baby pet rat seems to be having great difficulty breathing and is very agitated. All vets are closed, any advice on how we can help him until morning?

  • Rat Bite

My husband and I keep fancy rats as pets. This morning we lost one of our elderly males, and his littermate has become aggressive, having bitten my husband. His bite wound is cared for, but we're wondering what the likelihood of "Whiskers" biting again. Do rats become biters after they've bitten once? He has always been a bit skittish and antisocial, but he has never bitten before, other than mistaking a fingertip for food. Do they get that blood taste, and are never the same again? I'm realizing just how much I don't know. Thank you

  • rat eyes

I was wondering what the ratio of boric acid to water would be a safe eye flush for my rat? Thanks in Advance
