My hamster is a year old now, but about a month ago she started scratching her tummy, pelvic area and her rear legs a lot. It mainly seems to be in that region. The area is inflamed, very red, hot to touch and loss of hair. So I went to the pet shop where I got her from for some advice and they said it sounds like she has caught mites or something from the sawdust that I bought two months ago (it was from a farm pet shop and apparently there has been quite a few complaints about hamsters, rabbits etc having problems) Well I bought some spot treatment and I cleaned her cage out throughly and chucked all her sawdust, food and bedding and replaced it with new stuff. Well...

Dying hamster
Posted on 2009/09/20 by UserI'm pretty sure my hamster is dying. Earliest I can get to a vet is tomorrow but I don't think she'll make it. She's curled up in a ball not moving, and unresponsive when stroked. Yesterday she seemed a bit slower than usual but I didn't think anything of it, her breathing now is very laboured. Is there anything I can do?

The area around my hamsters tail appears very wet and red, however there is no sign of diahheria. Is there any chance it could be wet tail? I'm worried because there was a dog living with us over the last few days and the hamster seemed terrified.

my hamster has just had babies and I'm worried she has wet tail.
Posted on 2009/08/03 by UserMy hamster was pregnant when I bought her 2 weeks ago and gave birth 9 days ago. I haven't cleaned the cage since then as I was told not to disturb the nest. Now she is very wet around the tail and her fur is damp and unkempt elsewhere too. She is barely leaving the nest and seems unsteady on her feet. I don't know what to do as I don't want to disturb the nest and have her reject her pups but I'm worried that it might be wet tail.

My hamster, is she dying?
Posted on 2009/07/24 by LoisMy hamster, Gnasher is 1and3/4 years old, for the last 3 months now i have become increaseingly worried about her. She has lost almost all of her beatiful coat and has a chronic case of dandruff. She is quite skinny nad has baggy skin, Her eyes are sticky. Although there was no change in her inquizitive, Lively personality. I thought she may be dehydrated so i bought a new water bottle, just incase, that hasn't made any difference to her. She always has a supply of vega nd hamster food and porridge which i was advised by my mum to give her. Unfortunately none of this is making any difference, Gnasher is just starting to be a little quiter, i think she may be dying but,...

Hamster bed question
Posted on 2009/07/14 by UserWe bought a dwarf hamster two days ago. We also bought one of the cages with the wheel attached to the outside. At first he ran and ran in it. Then he started taking bedding in there. I cleaned it out once, but he just did it again. He has made his bed in there. He has an igloo house and a chewable log but doesn't seem interested in those. I don't know what to do b/c I know he needs the exercise of the wheel, but he can't run with all that stuff in there. I thought about buying another wheel to put inside the cage and just leaving his "bed" alone. I'm just not sure if that's the best idea or if there's a way to change his mind.
