Hi, I have a female choc. lab, 2 yrs. old at night she acts like something has bitten her on her privates (her pee-pee). She has been fixed. I have checked her poop and she has no worms. Could this just be dry skin or what?
Thanks

    Hi there,

This can be a frustrating problem to deal with as there are several possibilities. When you say you checked her poop and didn't see any worms, does this mean you looked yourself or did you take it into your vet? It would be rare for you to see adult worms in the stool with the naked eye, in most cases of parasites all that can be found are eggs in the stool and to diagnose that you need a microscope and a scpeical preparation method. So if your vet hasn't done this then that is the first step.

Licking her back end could also be related to full anal sacs, urinary tract infection, skin infection around the vulva and deep in the vulal folds ( this is generally very painful for them), fleas and behavioural issues.

Have a good look at her back end making sure there is no odour or redness or discharge.

If this problems is persisting she really should have a check up just to make sure everything is OK.

Thanks and she has been checked by the vet a couple months ago and she was clean. I also give her the heart worm ed monthly. She does not have redness or an odor, so I guess that is a good thing!!! Would it be safe to put vaseline on her and see if that helps? She does have some dry skin on her back and I have been puting skin so soft on her to help with that. I will call the vet tomorrow as they are closed today. Am I doing things safe for her? Thanks, Sharon

hmm its probably not going to hurt her but the trouble with ointments especially in dogs is that they can be just too greasy and make a sticky mess of the hair.  I would probably rather leave it alone for now and get it checked soon by your vet.

    Good luck
