I have a West Highland White TERRIER - WEIGHS 24 lbs. He's almost 7 years old.
Last summer he developed major gum problems about 2 months after having his teeth cleaned for the second time in his life.
He has been on "Revolution" for the past few years 10 months out of the year.
The vet put him on Denamarin since a blood test showed lower liver funtions then what he should have. He was drinking 6 to 7 cups of water in a 24 hour period. After being one the Denamarin now for 4 months his water consumption is down consistently for over 2 months to 2 to 3 cups of water per 24 hour period.
I think that the Revolution is causing his liver situation (a side effect of the medicine) and I am really hesitant to start him on Revolution again this spring. Do you think I am being rediculous or that he might be being harmed by this rather toxic drug that gets in his blood stream for 10 months our of the year?
He is an otherwise very heathy and moderately active dog. He likes to play and he eats very well. His teeth and gums are also totally back to normal now.
He's going for another (6 months) blood check of his liver function, etc.
BUT the Revolution?? Could it cause a liver and gum problem in an otherwise healthy Westie.
Can Revolution cause poor liver function and cause excessive water consumption?

AngusSymptoms: dental, itching & scratching, lethargy, weight loss -

this is the data sheet for revolution it states that increased liver enzymes can result and haematological changes can occur, with decreased cholesterol, tryglyceride and glucose levels. Unfortunately all products will have side effects however the risks are low. He is 7 years old which is not uncommon for liver and kidney function changes and many things can cause changes in these levels so it may just be coincidence with the flea treatment. there are other things that you can do to slow the liver changes such as a prescription diet which is targeted at liver patients. you will have to contact your vets for this as it is prescription only.

............also no mention of dental problems and unfortunately the skin may be irritant due to the breed as these are sensitive to alot of skin problems. weight loss and lethargy maybe due to the liver levels.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. It is comforting to learn that some of this may be "normal" in a Westie taking this medication. Might a different flea/tick preventative be less upsetting to his "liver" but just as effective or are they all basically the same formula and with the same side effects? He really stopped wanting to eat - lost almost 10 pounds over 2 months and daily consumed 1.5 quarts of water per day. I don't know if it is the Denamarin or not having his monthly flea/tick application of medicine behind his neck that was the help to him. Now, 2 cups or less of water per day, eating like a pig, maintaining strong healthy look and active as usual.

im glad he has improved and has a good appetite, unfortunately all medicines have many side effects, however use a reliable product such as Advantage, Frontline or continue with Revolution. Advantage flea treatment appears to have fewer side effects however the Revolution may be having no effect on your dogs liver. always use a veterinary mite control product as they tend to be effective and reliable. good luck
