Hi, I have a 16 y.o cat who has always been super skinny and bony as she was a small eater although she was offered food all the time. A few yrs back, we found lumps on her chest and after a vet visit, it was confirmed that she has tumours - as they had not gone through her muscle tissue, she had an operation & her mammary gland was removed. She recovered from this operation and continued to eat small portions until about 12mths ago when she became hungry all the time. Despite feeding her 2-3 tins each day (and whenver she wanted), she did not gain much weight at all and then a few mths ago, she started losing weight, became lethargic, stopped jumping and also drinking water - which she loved. We took her back a couple more times and then again 2wks ago & I asked if she could have a thyroid or kidney problem (she was also throwing up lots - usually liquid). She was put on medication, got her appetite back & then lost it again and again became very low on energy. We took her back again and now they have done an xray which showed nothing but when she was on a drip for dehydration, her belly filled right up (distended); her belly did this 2wks ago & although I stressed to the vet that this has NEVER happened something is not right - the vet dismissed me saying she had had alot of fluids. This time when they put her back on the drip, the other vet realised this & took her off. They have said she has alot of protein in her abdomen and that they think she has a tumour but the xray did not pick this up.... can this happen & not be seen in the xray? They say that they can do an ultrasound but that it wont change the treatment - could it be kidney disease and how would this be picked up?
She is home for the weekend and they said they can put her on steroids..
Cheers,
Aki
