I have a high strung 3 year old, female torti cat. We are adopting a 10 wk old special needs pup this week. What is the best way to introduce him to her?

    "Special needs" in what way?

Cats adapt to new situations and changes in environment in many different ways. She might spend a few weeks hiding away or she might go on the defensive, she might take to it or totally ignore the puppy as if it wasn't there. One way of helping her prepare for this sudden disruption in her life is to begin to bring the scent of the puppy into the house. For instance you could use a towel that the puppy has slept on and "dust" your house and also pop her food bowl on top of it so Chloe begins to learn that the smell of the puppy is associated with a pleasant experience.

When puppy arrives try to keep to your normal routines with Chloe and hand feed her something nice every time they are in the same room. If the puppy begins to chase Chloe just call it back and play a more fun game instead. Try not to make the cat appearing a big issue. Do not tell either one off for chasing or spitting. If after a few weeks you feel that you are likely to have further problems then ask your vet to recommend a qualified animal behaviourist.

    Hope that helps

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. Thank you for your advice. Chloe is my princess and I don't want to send her into a deep depression. Thanks again.
