Have you discussed further diagnostic work for the liver? If it isn't functioning as it should then diarrhoea can be a consequence of that. So although it's the obvious thing to focus on, it's important to find out if possible what is causing it. Sometimes to find out what that is involves quite invasive procedures, which you may decide not to do. If that's the case, you will have to try some symptomatic therapy as you are doing. This new episode of diarrhoea could be incidental to the main problem, but as long as Dusty is happy with a good appetite there's no reason to worry immediately. When you return to your vet for a check-up, ask about the possibility of further work, but give this current episode a chance to resolve first.

thank you. this new episode of diarhea i will wait - but my vet did say after ten days put dusty on regular food slowly and if he doesn't feel the same then bring him in and do another blood workup and maybe its the beginning of something - but if it is the liver can dusty live on rice and chicken indinitely or should he then be put on special prescription food and how long can a dog live with the beginning of liver disease in general

It depends very much on what the nature of the liver disease is- there are many different kinds, and a liver biopsy is the only way of certainty. There is a hepatic support prescription diet which would be ideal whatever the cause. I hope you get good news, let us know how it goes.

Hi again. My Dusty today 2/26/08 vomited several times foam after each one. Has stopped and he is alive and his usual self. He hasn't had diarrhoea for eight days after one eposide in two weeks. I have started given him dog food once a day in the morning for five days. At night Dusty is still on rice and chicken. Would vomiting after having nothing in his stomach for 8 1/2 hours come from his liver as we spoke before. I will be bringing him in next week for a blood work if he is okay. If he vomits tomorrow I will immediately take him to the vet. But he is barking for his food right now.
