pet rat

I have a pet rat who is about 18 months old, yesterday I noticed that her left front paw is swollen and she is keeping it hitched up. If she knocks it it isn't really bothering her but she is not using it at all. It is slightly red but very swollen to about 3 times its normal size. Any idea what it could be, is it common or do you think I need to take her to see somebody? Thanks.

I would probably take her to see a veterinarian, as she may need antibiotics.

It could be bumblefoot, or infection.

    What is she kept on?

I had this same problem with about 3-4 of my rats. I found that wire floors in the cages bothered them as well as carpet - they seemed to have an allergic reaction to some of the chemicals used to treat the carpets. Hope you are able to find an answer - it took me a long time to figure it out with my rats because the vet could find no reason for the problem and there seemed to be no pain.
