Hi, I just got 2 pet rats on Jan. 25, 09. One of the rats is missing his left eye from fighting with another rat at the pet store. The eye has this red discharge and he keep strying to clean it. Is there anything I can do for him til I am able to take him to a vet? Please let me know, I am very concerned for him! Thank you!

    Hi

Unfortunately the rat will probably need an anesthetic and an operation to surgically remove that protruding eye and suture the skin closed over the socket. There is nothing you can do in the way of pain relief at home I/m afraid. You can gently bathe the eye in salty water to stop it getting infected but it basically just needs an operation ASAP.
