worried about old dog

Hi, I have an 11 year old choc. lab. In the past 2 weeks he hasn't been eating well. Yesterday he went to get up and it seemed like one side of his body was limp and he fell and couldn't get up. I thought he hurt his paw. He layed for hours with his heart racing and moaning a couple of times. Our family held vigil thinking it was only a matter of time before he passed. He didn't seem well at all. After a 3-4 hours he was able to move a little and even ate. Today he seems fine. We think maybe he had a mild stroke. What do you think? Kelle

Hi there, good to hear your dog has recovered. This sounds very much like a stroke, or a fibrocartilagenous embolism (FCE) to the blood supplying a section of his spine.  It seems to have only affected one side and like many strokes, has resolved over a day.  FCE's are normally not painful so his reaction is surprising but he may have just been distressed at being unable to move. If he is walking around completely normally now and not showing signs of discomfort, he may have been lucky but I would continue to keep a close eye on him and maybe limit his excercise for a couple of weeks.  Also please use a harness instead of a coller on him. If he is dragging any of his legs, seems in-coordinated or seems painful in his neck or spine, I would have him examined by a vet soon.
