Allergies

Ebony keeps chewing at her paws, to the point now that her back paw has a sore spot and it swollen. Is this because of her allergies, and if so how do we stop it? I have been putting neosporin and covering it up with a sock. But during the day when we are gone she gets the sock off and starts chewing again.

Have you talked with your veterinarian about antihistamine therapy for her allergies? Some antihistamines can mildly sedate pets as well and will aid in preveting further chewing.

    Has she been allergy tested?

She is on predisone treatments now. I can only give her one every two or three days because she starts heave breathing when I was doing one a day. She has not actually been tested for allergies to see what are the main things she is allergic to. We do know she is allergic to fragrances and pollen just by her actions when near these things.

They didn't suggest Benadryl or Chlorpheniramine?

Prednisone is helpful, but usually not a good long term medication (as it can affect the liver).

With allergy testing you could do a more exact treatment with allergy shots (just like with people).

no they didn't, but would it be okay to change her to benadryl? They had told me to reduce the dosage, which is why I only give her one every two or three days. She is almost ten at this time.

I would ask them what dose would work for her, but Benadryl can help manage allergies and make them a little drowsy (while they get used to the dosing).
