Cat with wound

Hi, we are cat sitting for a pair of male sibling cats. One has an old wound on his neck, which has turned into an open soar from scratching. It is growing in size as he won't stop scratching it. It doesn't appear infected and we are trying to put ointment on it as often as we can. Any ideas on what to do?

This is something that you should make an appointment for at the owners vets office. This kind of problem can get out of hand quite quickly. Sometimes it can be related to an allergy and he may need antiinflammatories in order for it to heal.

Can you put something in the way to stop him scratching it in the meantime like an elizabethan collar ( if the wound is in the right position for this to work) or a light babys T shirt?

Well, today my wife got worried about the cat, so we brought him to our vet and had his records faxed there. The Dr. said the same as you.... probably an allergy, and probably to fleas. She gave the cat a cortisone shot to keep the itching down and gave us some amoxicillan to give him. She also told us to use diluted peroxide compress once a day, and gave us advise on using Advantage to pass on to the cat's owners (my aunt & uncle). We will try your suggestion of the light t-shirt around his neck to see if that keeps his wound covered.. Thanks for your help, Angela.
