Female Dogs & Fighting

Rating: 9

This question is not about Champ, its for my other two, older chihuahua females. They get along great, but sometimes they start to fight, especially at night. Their jaws lock together and one always comes out bleeding or limping. Sometimes it happens 2-3 times a day or not at all. Would getting them fixed help the sitation by stopping the fighting?

Bitch aggression can be one of the most serious forms of aggression and needs to be assessed by a qualified dog behaviourist. Your vet should be able to recommend someone. It tends to happen if the two bitches are similar in strengths and want the same things. These might be the warmer bed, food, owner’s attention, toys, water or even just personal space. It is not something I could possibly give advice on in a few lines without seeing the two dogs interact as the wrong advice could make the situation a lot worse.

Dogs do not live in an equal society and if two want the same things and are competing, one has to defer (back down) to stop the aggression increasing. You will need help with this or one of them will get hurt. Getting them "fixed" is not likely to stop females competing with each other unless its hormone related.

Good luck there is help out there

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. It then goes on to cover different problems that commonly occur between owners and their maturing or adult dogs by discussing real case studies. TO BUY VISIT www.rosiebarclay.com
