Illness

I have had a stray mixed breed outside dog for 6 years. I estimate his age to be 7 or 8 years. Yesterday he appeared to be fine - playing, eating and normal behaviour. Last night I noticed he was limping - which has progressed to both front and back legs stiff and weak. I have manipulted his leges looking for muscle soreness broken bones, sores or bites. I found nothing. Neither did he appear to be botherd by my checking. I kept him inside last night (which is something he generally does not tolerate) and he appears to be worse this morning. he was lethargic but also moved around quite a bitlike he was trying to get comfortable. He ate a little this morning and drank a little water. Please tell me what might be wrong.

This could be several things, and it sounds like a neurological problem - in other words, something is likely wrong with his neck or spine which is interrupting the flow of nerve impulses from the brain.  This could be something like a slipped disc, it could be an infection in the spinal canal, inflammation in the spinal canal or even cancer.  I am afraid a work-up of the condtion would likely be very expensive, ranging from blood work and xrays, even MRI scans and analysis of spinal fluid.  I would advise a check up with your vet ASAP to assess the extent of the problem.  Good luck!
