Recently though her breathing seems to of become really laboured to the point were sometimes she opens her mouth when she breaths in! She is also quite bony now but i have put that down to her age although she still has quite a greedy appitite! I know shes old but is there anything i can give her to help with the breathing! Many thanx.

Hi, The breathing may actually be a consequence of many things that I feel would be worthy of a visit to your veterinarian. Weight loss despite a good appetite may be a consequence of a problem. Obviously an increased rate of breathing can be due to respiratory (lung) or cardiovascular (heart) disease but more commonly so can be a manifestation of pain or nausea due to metabolic acidosis (conditions like kidney failure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism). As you can see the list of possibilities is long. I would recommend an initial clinical examination by your veterinarian and a general health profile blood test and then possibly urinalysis / thyroid function tests depending on what those results bring. This will rule out whether there is a problem or not and ensure that Ellemay has a good and healthy retirement!

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks

Having a pet comes with responsibilities. The right to food shelter and also the right to be kept health & free from disease & fleas etc. This can be expensive so Insurance is very important. Most people insure their homes, cars,& their own lives so why not their pets.
