How do I stop my ferret from
smelling so bad? He stinks to high heaven, despite being seemingly clean and well house trained.

Castrating your ferret should reduce the smell significantly. This is a simple operation done under a quick general anesthetic. However, your ferret will not be odourless afterwards, just have a less pungent smell. The anal glands can be removed sometimes as well, though this is deemed unethical by many and there could be unpleasant compications such as faecal incontinence. My advise would be to book in a castration ASAP.

OK will his character change at all if I castrate him and is there a high anesthetic risk?

He should become easier to handle, still cheeky but less likely to show aggression. The anesthetic risk in ferrets is higher than dogs and cats but still quite low.
