Doesn't like to be picked up and held.

Boots
Boots

Boots was originally a stray (believe a lost cat the owners never claimed). She is the only pet I have and I live alone. Although she does have "affection" actions, she has never liked to be picked up and held. The ONLY time is at the Vet's and that is because she is scared. Is there anything I can do to add this to our "affectionate" behaviors? I have never owned a cat where I could not pick them up and hold them.

Hi there - I am afraid I have a cat that is identical to yours - he was an outdoor cat that we rescued, and he will NOT let us pick him up, and this is about 6 years later!  It is difficult to train cats, especially when they have been free to roam about outdoors, so I think you may just have to deal with the fact that Boots doesnt like to be held and probably never will.

I believe you're right, but when I "got" her, she was still very much a kitten. As I don't know when she was actually born, I really didn't know how old she was. When I took her to the vet to get fixed and get all the necessary shots, to my suprise, she was already "fixed" which is how I knew she had to have had previous owners (or "escaped" and animal shelter! ;) ). I guess I will just have to accept her "eccentricities" and encourage the affection she does give. She's the first cat I've ever had that likes to "spoon" with me if I happen to lay down on the couch! I can say, there's never a dull moment with her, and our personalities really seem to compliment one another. Thanks for your reply. Kim

My point, before I got carried away in my response, and being that I failed to mention Boots is still a kitten in my original question, is there hope? Is there something I can do that might make her become comfortable? Or do you think this is already too ingrained in her to make the change?

It sounds to me that she is plenty comfortable (enough to spoon with you!), and I would just accept her as she is.  Nothing you can do!  Enjoy her, she sounds like she would get along with my cat "Ainsley" :)
