I think my Sun Conure Parrot needs help...

Rating: 0

Dr. Allison Williams helped me with my Cat.. Now I am hoping someone can help me with my Parrot.
I have a Sun Conure Parrot named "Summer" and something is wrong. It started almost a week ago when I uncovered her cage in the Morning and she was almost lying on her side on the bottom of her cage. She wouldn't eat, Drink or even eat Treats or play. Normally she is VERY active, outgoing, LOUD, dancing, and more. She finally came around. My Wife told me that she heard her flapping in her cage when my wife came home from the Overnight shift and must have scared her. After that day, she has been spending alot of time on her highest perch and she sleeps alot. She only gets loud when I leave the room. She has normal appetite and drinks like she always has, and her stool looks normal as well. I keep her cage clean, She is only closed up in her cage when I am gone or sleeping. I am disabled and I spend every minute I have with my Birds and Cats. She has no visible injuries, no feather plucking, her butt seems normal, and she is clean. She loves to bathe.
I had a Quaker Parrot who passed away 4 years ago. He was an injured rescue Bird and couldn't grip a perch. when I brought him to the Vet, he was bloated, miserable and had clear saliva like fluid coming from his mouth. It turned out he has some crusted Stool covering his Butt under his feathers and it ultimately killed him. I have read everything I could possibly read up on all of my Parrots, I check them daily for anything and everything. I was told once by an Avian Specialist from California that all birds hide their illnesses and you can usually never tell something is wrong until it is too late.
I am not sure how old "Summer" is, I rescued her back in 2003 and the lady I rescued her from told me she thought she was 5 years old. On her back she has really gotten alot of yellow these past 2 years which tells me she is a bit older being as the young ones have green feathers and they get yellower as they get older. I know my bird and I can just tell somethingis not right. She is like a Daughter, a best Friend and I can't lose her. Parrots have more personality than any other animal I have ever seen. She is amazing.
My biggest problem is.. There are zero Avian Specialists where I live and I am not sure what to do. Plus it is -22 outside actual temp and even simply exposing her to the elements to transport her could kill her. Please does anyone have any advise or recommendations that I can do myself? Sometimes she seems normal but, She has just been spending alot of time on her upper perch inside her cage and sleeps alot and thats just not normal for her.

I understand your worry! I have a Senegal Parrot myself, and I think birds are wonderful and amazing pets!  Summer is definetly not acting "normal" as per your description. It is possible that she has had a seizure (your wife hearing her flapping at night), and this would definetly require medical attention. There are liquid medications that birds can take to help with this issue. Since she is eating and acting more like herself now, that is a good sign. As you mentioned, it is true that bird "mask" their symptoms and usually don't show signs of illness until they are very sick.  An important thing that you can do at home is monitor her weight. You can buy a food scale that weighs in grams at Walmart. A daily weight on a bird is a great tool, and can really give you insight as to changes. A bird should be seen by a veterinarian if it ever loses more than 10% of its body weight. I wish I could give you an idea of what to do for Summer, but without knowing what may have staarted this issue, I cannot do that. Inquire in your area for a veterinarian that see's avians since you already know you do not have a board certified avian vet. There are many great vets that are not certified, but have studied and choose to treat avians. I wish you much Luck with Summer, she sounds like a great bird!        Carole
