Aggresive behavior towards younger cat and urinating where he should not be.

Kelsey

We have 4 cats, a 14 yr old male, (2) 1 year olds and Kelsey 7 yrs old. Several weeks ago he got on my side of the bed and urinated. Then several weeks later, he has gotten on my kitchen counters and urinated. Two consecutive nights, once on the coffee pot on one counter and another time on the island on a basket of napkins. He is often aggressive towards one of the kittens, which are both spayed females. I have been using Feliway for 3 months to try and calm him and just in the past week the accidents have occured. He is a very jealous cat as well. I don't know what to do with him and it is not just spraying or a urinary infect. as it is too much urine. Several years ago he had a urinary tract but not in a long time. I have given him extra attention and even alone time with me. I don't know what to do and my husband is threatening to get rid of him. He was always the picture perfect cat until the kittens came. They were a year old in Dec. and they are both trying to play and love him. Please help!

    Hi Sandy

It is very difficult when cat relationships break down but it is understandable since cats generally don't choose to live in large groups unless they have to and often prefer to have their own things to themselves. Perhaps having to share stuff with two others is simply too much for Kelsey and he is trying to tell them that he is around and not to touch. You might like to try and get some help from a certified animal behavioural consultant (CABC) recommended by your vet who might be able to change Kelsey’s mind with a bit of positive association but if this doesn't help just think about the welfare of all your cats and what might be best for each one. Perhaps Kelsey wants to be an only cat.

Sorry not to be of any more help

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. It then goes on to cover different problems that commonly occur between owners and their maturing or adult dogs by discussing real case studies. TO BUY VISIT www.rosiebarclay.com
