princess is 18 yrs old. she is deaf. she has recently started to meow very loudly when she realizes she is by herself. if she's in the kitchen eating by herself or coming from the litter box from the bathroom or if she wakes up in the middle of the night. she is very close to me, and when i am home she is with me all the time. she won't sleep with me though, i tried. my husband and i need to sleep, her meowing is so loud it wakes us up and she will keep it up until i usually get up and sometimes that's very early. she is very loving and loves to be petted. eating, bathroom, weight, sleeping, habits have not changed. any suggestions? thank you

    Hi Gale

Wow Princess is a good age for a cat. I assume you have been responding to her meows and this may have reinforced her behaviour. She is obviously feeling her age and when you are very old you may start to show some age related problems and these can involve feelings of distress and not being able to recognise where you are etc. Your vet may be able to suggest some medication to help her to cope better with old age and give her a good check up to make sure she is not in pain etc.

You may be able to increase her sense of security by increasing her scent that surrounds where she lives. Cats use scent as a way of communicating to others and to themselves and it helps to identify their surroundings. If you use a towel that she has been sleeping on and use it to dust around the house at cat height it might help her be able to remember where she is. You won't be able to smell anything but she will.

Meanwhile enjoy her company and feel blessed that you have a cat of such great age.

     All the best

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. It then goes on to cover different problems that commonly occur between owners and their maturing or adult dogs by discussing real case studies. TO BUY VISIT www.rosiebarclay.com
