Litter Problems!!!! HELP!

Rating: 8

I had my male cat fixed and declawed two days ago. I bought a newspaper pellet litter for him from the vet. He is terrified of the pellets, so the vet told me to tear up newspaper and use that. He absolutely refuses to use it. What do I do?

    Hi Christina

Use the substrate that he would normally use. If he was used to a different litter as a kitten use that, or perhaps he has become accustomed to using soil so use that. Make sure the tray is in a position where he doesn't feel threatened and add a few extra ones. You could perhaps try high sided ones and low sided ones and put these in different places.

Declawing is not something we usually do in the UK so I haven’t had any experience with this but I would assume they would hurt and thus he may be associating the litter and digging about in it with pain. Once his claws have healed hopefully he will be able to dig about without feeling pain and thus resort to his normal way of urinating.

    All the best

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. It then goes on to cover different problems that commonly occur between owners and their maturing or adult dogs by discussing real case studies. TO BUY VISIT www.rosiebarclay.com
