my dog is normal in every way except that he seems to not be able to keep his balance. most of the time he doesnt have a problem but he trips alot or walks sideways. he does seem to be shaking his head some but not alot. he is 8 yrs old and otherwise fine. could he have an infection or maybe a bug or something in his ear? is it something we could try a home remedy for?

A loss of balance is generally attributed to the vestibular system. Without getting into too many specifics, we typically think of a loss of balance due either to an inner ear problem or something deeper--the brain. Vestibular problems often present with clinical signs of a head tilt, nystagmus (eyes that are "dancing" around),and incoordination. Not eating is fairly common due to the diorientation and resulting nausea. These conditions do typically require some veterinary intervention--especially to rule out the "deeper brain" problems. Hopefully all he will need are topicals and perhaps steroids for inflammation.
