About a week ago my 10yr old beagle started acting hurt. He has been sleeping on his back and the past week he doesn't like laying on his back. he sleeps on his side or on his belly. he doesn't want to get up in the mornings and when he does he is whimpering and keeps his head tilted down. he is also swallowing alot. what could this be?

Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible.  These symptoms could be indicative of several things including, but not limited to gall bladder stones, urinary tract infections, hormone imbalance, tumors, internal injury or possibly something as simple as age making certain positions and morning rising uncomfortable.  Older dogs experience more aches and pains just like people.  The swallowing a lot could be indicative of any amount of glandular issues or in response to his discomfort.  A veterinarian can perform all of the necessary test to effectively diagnose and treat Roscoe.  Most likely this process will begin with a general physical exam followed by blood work or testing of the urine. If necessary, the next step would be an ultrasound if those former tests revealed nothing.  Best wishes to you!
