Stomach Rash

My Chihuahua has what appears to be some sort of rash on the middle/center of her stomach that goes down the sides of her stomach and part way down the insides of her back legs. It is brownish in color and is kindof crusty, almost like a scab (might be hard to see in the pic). It doesn't seem to bother her, every once in a while she might try to scratch it, but doesn't seem to be a big problem. It started very small on her stomach a few months ago (and just looked dirty) and gradually got bigger (baths don't seem to make a difference). What could it be? What should I do about it?

This could be an allergy or a hot spot.  It could also be a rash left behind from parasitic bites.  Such parasites could include mange, fleas, mosquitoes, lice or ringworm.  If she is parasite free and you know it, try the following:

    1.  Limited ingredient diet - use a food specifically free of allergens, and don't skimp on the quality.  Natural Balance has a good line of LID foods.  Science diet also has several sensetive skin and allergy formulas.

    2.  Use hypo allergenic shampoo made for dogs.  Your local groomer or vet can suggest a good one.  I use bio groom's allergen free brand on my chihuahua.  Also, small, short haired dogs should only need a bath every 6 or 8 weeks at the most - and this only with the best quality grooming products.  Stay away from colognes or conditioning sprays.

If all of this fails, I would seek a vet's advice.  It may be a good idea to take her in for a checkup to begin with anyway, just to rule out anything that could be regional.
