Something other than prednisone?

Is there a medicine that is comparable to prednisone for dogs? My dog has Addison's disease so is currently on prednisone, but has since developed Cushings disease from being on the pred. Is there another med that would help him but not have the horrible side effects that pred has?? Thanks so much.

We usually use something called percorten to treat our addisonians, which is an injectable medication they typicaly get every 22-28 days. We even teach many owners how to give it at home once they are controlled. The side effects of this are less noticeable than for the oral prednisolone and most do extremelly well, rarely do they need any further oral steroid supplements. The only drawback for this injection is the cost!

    Ask your vet about this.

Thanks so much for your response. SO I assume with the percorten, the dogs don't get the same cushings disease that they can get from the oral steriod? My dig has lost all of the fur in his back...which they say if from the prednisone. We tried to wean him off of the pred, but his addison's symptoms came back full force :( So we are trying to find another med that would be easier on his body and not the same side effects as the pred. Thanks!
