twitching in legs

Rating: 9

My cat will be 21 years old this month. She has recently started having seizures a few times a week. She has developed a twitching in her legs and can't stay still long enough to sleep or eat. I have to hold her on my lap to feed her. She walks around the house aimlessly all day long. I hold her a few times a day to give her a rest and she will only sleep for a few hours when she's absolutely exhausted. Can I give her anything to stop the leg twitching?

THere are very few things over the counter that you can give to any cat. Cats are typical very sensitive to human pharmaceuticals. Given her age, she possibly has developed some level of senility and that could explain her aimless walking, but without a thorough exam and neurologic evaluation you're not going to get any really good answers. The leg tremors could be due to weakening of the muscles in her hind legs due to age. I would recommend giving her all the loving care you can so she doesn't have to walk around all the time and get her a senior check-up with a local veterinarian. Request a senior bloodwork panel and that can help you rule out some possible diseases.

My cat passed away prior to receiving your reply. My family took turns holding and loving her to ease the strain on her legs during the last 2 months of her life. She was eating and drinking up to the day before her passing. At her advanced age, I could not subject her to blood tests, etc. She passed peaceably laying on her bed. Your reply eased my mind and made me feel better that I had kept her home and did not subject her to tests at this time in her life. All living things get old and just need the family's love to ease their passing.
