Intestinal problem

Rating: 9
Bud
Bud

My mother has an English Bulldog named Bud who ate beef sparerib bones over the weekend and now Bud has lost his appetite and is unable to go to the bathroom. My mother took him to our local vet and they gave him an enima, which helped his situation but did not remove the bones. After the enima, they x-rayed him and still saw the mass of bones. They sent Bud home hoping that either the bones would dissolve or that he would pass them. Our vet said that performing surgery would be out of the question due to the fact that Bud is on the medicine predizone and he is also overweight. Is there anything that we can do to speed up the process of dissolving the bones? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Bud is like a member of our family and we hate to see him suffer.

Thanks,
Jenny Thaxton

There isn't really anything you can do to speed the process up, but giving him liquid paraffin or another laxative might help him passs them. They are usually digested eventually, if slowly. If they get to the large intestine and don't shift, he might need another enema. Don't feed him anything in the meantime, but plenty of fresh water, and try to tackle his weight as a priority so that if he needs an anaesthetic again in the future for any reason he has more chance of coming through it ok. Good luck!
