If it appeared quite suddenly the most likely cause is a sting, bite or traumatice injury. Swellings can be indicative of growths or infections but you'd expect them to be slower to appear. Providing he is not on any other medication, a small amount of aspirin might reduce the swelling and make him more comfortable. If he isn't back to normal in a day or two, you could take him to the vet then.
