whining and restless dog

i have a 6 yr old female, blue healer terrier named Jake that likes to whine and does not sleep well at night. Is there anything i can give her to help calm her down and help her sleep at night? I take her out to potty before going to bed and she seems to be waking up 2-3 times at nite and whines for attention. I have tried the squirting with water, spanking her nose and just plan harshly telling her to quit and ignoring just makes it worse till she finally gives up and will eventually go to sleep. please help..

  Is she just wanting to go out to use the bathroom? or Do you think there is another reason other than she just wants attention? I need a little more information on this to help you out.
