My cat was drinking water heavily fro the past week and also urinating heavily. About 24 hrs ago he stopped eating and drinking. How long can a cat survive without drinking water?

Cells will start to die in the body very rapidly after no water consumption for 24 hours. A normal healthy cat will require 50ml of water per kilogram of body weight (a 2kg cat requires 100ml of water per day)
With your cats age and the symptoms it sounds suggestive of Kidney failure . I would recommned veterinary treatment ASAP to either give your cat intravenous fluid therapy or a bloodtest to check his kidney values.
It may be a heavy urinary infection that he has as well as this can have simular symptoms but is probally more likely to be kidney failure. cats can live with acute kidney failure on medication so it is not all bad news. It just depends on what stage he is at with the kidney failure if it is kidney failure.
Hope this helps

In the mean time please try and temp him or administer water orally (by the mouth) via a turkey baster or syringe.

Thanks -- we have been feeding him water with a syringe about 50 ml so far today -- he's a 4 kg cat. He has continued to urinate, once per day -- the urine is colorless. He is very weak. Our vet looked him over on Friday -- took some blood to run a std panel and also a thyroid test. The results are due back tomorrow. He also had a rabies shot yesterday.

You are nursing him very efficientley! Please let me know how he goes on . He will require 200ml fluid per day but more than half of this amount is ok
