Dogs will shed, or molt, through out the year. This is common with most breeds and will vary depending on whether the dog is indoors or out. However, if you are finding patches of hair loss and bald spots on the dog, then you may be dealing with an illness. Folliculitis is the broad term for disease of the follicles and is generally caused be either mites, fungal (ringworm), or bacterial skin infections. Typically the skin will exhibit a redness, flakiness, bumps, skin thickness changes, and odor to name a few. If the dog is also itching, we add on differentials of parasites--mites, fleas, ticks, environmental/inhaled allergens and food allergies.
