snow consumption

Rating: 9
Kashmir
Kashmir

Kashmir eats snow to the point of shivering and mild convulsions. Any recommendations for controlling this. She won't stop unless I hold her head out of the snow. I'm considering a muzzel. Will this help?

This is quite an unusal problem, but sometimes dogs do get a compulsion to consume certain types of things. A muzzle is a good idea in the short term to break the habit, but the ideal long term solution is to replace the behaviour with an alternative which is mutually exclusive to snow eating. If she will play with a ball or take a biscuit, or anything else she enjoys, begin training her to replace the snow with something she likes better. Call her from the snow and give her a command followed by attention/ball or treat. With consistency she will be focused on earning her reward in a different way and forget about the snow. Just in case it's physical though, make sure she is healthy and has plenty of water just in case the habit started due to thirst.
