Yes this is something that warrants a visit to your vet. The most most likely things that springs to mind is something called hyperthyroidism. This is a condition where the thyroid gland is overactive and much more common in older cats. Typical symptoms are eating more but losing weight sometimes along with hyperactivity and increased thirst.
Your vet can diagmose this with the help of blood tests and a physical exam. If he has this then it can usually be managed with oral medications.
