dark chocolate

Girl Scout
Girl Scout

Girl Scout ate 1-2 ounces of adark chocolate candy bar about an hour to an hour and 1/2 ago. She appears fine - no hyperactivity, no diarrhea, nothing abnormal. How long should we watch her for symptoms?

Hi there. You are right to be concerned as chocolate, particularily dark chocolate in moderate to large amounts is toxic to dogs and can affect the heart and kidneys.  However, if Girl-scout is a medium to large sized cocker spaniel, 1-2 oz shouldn't cause a toxicity as it is still below the toxic dose.  See http://www.talktothevet.com/ARTICLES/DOGS/chocolatetoxic.HTM .

Please keep a close eye on her and if she shows any signs such as vomitting or lethargy, have her examined by a vet but hopefully she has gotten away with it!
