Weepy Iriitated Eye- 1 1/2 year old indoor cat

For approx. the past 2 hours, my cat's right eye has become weepy, and she can not open it in the light. It began rather abruptly and looks slightly red, which appears to be from rubbing & irritation. In a darkened room she is able to open it, but in the light she shuts it almost immediately and it starts to weep. I did notice she has been making sneezing noises this week, which I haven't heard since she was a kitten...I was also using cleaning products around the house today, but have never seen this reaction from her. Her behavior has been the same (playful, eating, drinking etc.), and physically I didn't notice any other differences. I tried to flush her eye with water, but it's difficult to hold onto her and hold her eye open at the same time. Right now she is asleep - should I be worried or is eye irritation common? Should I flush it with something?

Hello there. The cause of your cat's eye problem may be the cleaning products but could also be a foriegn body (grass seed, etc), conjunticitis or uveitis.  If you can, have a look in her eye for any foriegn bodies.  If she is an indoor cat, this is less likely.  You mentioned she was sneezing and there are some infections that can cause sneezing as well as runny eyes, and it could be that the eye problem just happened to develop today as part of the infection.  I would wash her eye with cotton wool soaked in boiled (cooled) water and keep her in a dark room. If the eye isn't improving tomorrow, I would take her to see a vet as eyes are very delicate and shouldnt be left too long.

Thanks, she is sleeping and seems peaceful right now.....do you suggest I wake her up to wash her eye tonight or wait until she wakes on her own?....I want to make her as comfortable as possible.

Thanks for the reply. I would probably wash the eye asap as if there are foriegn bodies/chemicals causing the prob, flushing the eye may help straight away. I know it's a pity to wake her!!
