I have a 4 yr old male cat that is neutered & he is an indoor/outdoor cat. He just urinated & it was bloody. He has been urinating more frequently & started going outside of his litter box which is not like him. How quickly does he need vet care & what do you think it is?

Hi there. I'm afraid this sounds very much like cystitis, a common condition in male cats. If he is still passing urine, this is not an emergency but you should book him in to see a vet as soon as possible.  If he stops being able to pass urine and you catch him straining unproductively over a few hours, he may be blocked and this becomes a life-threatening emergency.  In the meantime, you can monitor his urination, keep him on wet food and ensure he is drinking plenty of water and still passing urine.  The vet may take a sample of his urine for analysis and may consider putting him on antibiotics and/or antiinflammatories.  Some causes of this disease include bacterial infection, bladder stones, stress and inflammation.  Long term management usually involves wet food, encouraging water intake by placing many water bowls around the house, spiking his water with tuna brine or providing a water fountain (many catgs love these!), creating a calm environment with a plug-in like Feliway, special prescription diets in the case of stones and non-prescription supplements like glucosamine.  Many of these products as well as prescription medications that your vet may prescribe are available "<a href=""http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-2740930-10370532?sid=1008"" target=""_top"" onmouseover=""window.status='http://www.entirelypets.com';return true;"" onmouseout=""window.status=' ';return true;"">KEYWORD HERE</a>
