chocolate

my yellow lab just downed a bag of chocolate chip's, I know that's not a good thing for a dog, what will happen with that much chocolate in his system or what could happen ? thanks Brad

    Hello Brad:

    Yes, you are right! Chocolate is toxic for dogs because of the caffeine unless caffeine free. It's actually the caffeine or a chemical in caffeine that makes it toxic for them. Depending on the body mass of the puppy/dog the amount of caffeinne in the sytem that they can bear varies but if toxic amount is present than their heart rate can possible start to accelerate to such a high speed that they can have a siezure/heart attack.

    Try to be careful with caffeine products in your house hold like some candies, soda, coffee and tea unless caffeine free. I don't suggest to stop with caffeien products in your homes but just raise it to a high level or lock in cabinets away from your puppy/dogs reach.....

    It is a substance called theobromine which is toxic to dogs, and found in chocolate - not caffeine. Please read the following article for further information:
