The nails on animals continuley shed there layers (like snakes shed there skin) This is normal and is normally more noticable on older dogs. Try rubbing vasaline oil or thick gel into the nails to moisten them and prevent them shedding too much.
Products with biotin can be very good for the nails , please see www.entirley.com to search there products to see if there are any gels or homeopathic products contain this
