seizzures and medication

max has seizures and fits, he is on medication and is suppose to eat before taking medication.
Is it ok to give him milk to coat his stomach before taking the medication. The medication makes him vomit if he does not eat something first.
I am also considering having him tested for lead. The medication is not working very well.

I would probally give him a full meal before his medication , as medication can have gastrointestinal effects on a empty stomach. If he is not eating then i would advise a trip to the vets to have him checked. Milk is not recommended for lining a stomache it is best given on a full stomach

Max will not eat at the times I need to give him the medication. He does eat, but when he feels like it. Max is overweight, due to the medication. Max needs to take his medication every 12 hours. Max has had all of the tests, cat scan etc , which is a large expense. Are you saying , it is a mistake to give Max milk? Would this create more problems? I will be taking Max to the Vet on Sat. but I was hoping to have another Vet's ideas. My Vet also works with the VCA Hospital for Max. My Vet is not comfortable treating Max because the medication is not working the way it should. We want to get this under control but do not want to be in debt because of it. I hope this is not a lost cause.

Yes you can use milk to line his stomach , but a full stomach works better. But i can be used as a last resort.

If he needs his medication every 12 hours then offer him a measured amount of food every 12 hours. Try to get him into a routine even if its a full stomach of fresh chicken. (it is low in fat aswell) This will make it easier for you to administer.

Please bear in mid that if Max has not had milk in the past regulally then it may upset his gastronintestinal system.

If he has had milk on a regular basis in the past the guts work up a acceptance of it, less likley to cause a gastrointestinal upset such as dirrohea or vomiting. And milk does contain fats , adding to his weight problem.

Please express your concerns to your veterinary surgeon, It can be difficult to stablise seizuring activity in dogs, are all the tests normal that max has had done? If the tests are all fine then seizuring in dogs can be classed as Idiopathic - this term is unkown seizuiring, but getting the dose of the tablets just right can be a lengthy process to combat the seizuring.

Stacey, Yes, Max's test came back normal! They are saying that he has epilepsy. Max was fine until he was about 1 year old and was sprayed ,very badly, by a skunk. I am going to have Max take a blood test for lead. My son said he saw on the news, a man had the same problem, with his dog.He had the dog tested for lead and his dog did have lead in his blood stream. All of the issues with China, dog bowls and toys all made in china also were also found to contain lead. Have you heard anything about this?

Yes i have. Lead is very posionous and would normally show a indication is routine blood testing by a raised liver enzymes as this can indicate toxicity.

If you want the test then that is a very good aproach to take because it will rule it out. Please let me know how the tests come back .

Stacey, Max had the test taken today. I hope to have the results by Tuesday or Wednesday. I will let you know how the blood test for lead comes out. If Max ends up with lead in his blood stream, I would think ,it should be a common test to have all dogs take. This is a very scary thing for Max and for us. Thank you for all help.
