This sounds like a minor seizure. Is it the first time this has happened? He is the right age for early onset epilepsy, but there are also numerous other causes. Don't rush to the vets immediately, but keep a record of what happened and observe him closely for any further events. It can be a one-off thing, but often it will recur and require investigation. Be very careful handling him during and after an event like this- even the nicest tempered dog can have a personality change and bite someone. The best way to deal with it is to keep him somewhere safe and quiet where you can watch him from a distance until he is back to normal.
