dwarf hamsters and seizures--or dreaming??

Rating: 10

My hamster seems to be dreaming in her sleep-unaware of being picked up. makes squeaking sounds. Once she wakes, she seems fine. She was bleeding for a couple of wks but her medicine seems to have stopped that. She's still eating and drinking. I almost had her euthanized because the vet thot she might have uterine cancer. As long as she seems ok, I'd rather not do that but I hate the thot of her being in pain. It looks just like what my dog does when she's sleeping and "dreaming"

I can understand how it would be hard to differentiate between seizures and sleeping in this case.  It is normal in any animal that has had a seizure to act relatively normal after the seizure has ended, such as eating and drinking like normal.  You said she is unaware of being picked up.  While she is having these episodes, pick her up and pinch her toe.  If she reacts and wakes up, she is sleeping.  If there is no reaction and the episode continues, it is probably a seizure.  She could be having a seizure if, as you said, she has a cancer or if she has a bad infection.  If it is a seizure, you should take her to the vet and he or she can advise you of what an appropriate course of action should be.  If you have any other concerns, you may contact me or your veterinarian.
