Pinkish Red Fluid

Rating: 9

Opie

The last few days my 18 mo old male cat has been squatting in odd places as if he's going to use his litter box. The first time I noticed this I was concerned because he appeared to be having complications. I raised his tail and saw something light red in color coming out, then a few puffs of air, and then a pinkish red fluid squirted out. His appetite appears normal as well as his water intake. His playful & affectionat personality has not changed either... I have no clue what this could be nor if/how life threatening?

This can be a nuber of things -

    1) Cystitis (inflammation of the bladder due to a urinary tract infection) This pinkish fluid that you are seeing is probally urine and explains Opies behaviour by squatting in odd places as Opie will feel the need to go to the toilet all of the time as it can be painful in emptying his bladder. This can be cleared up with antibiotics from your vet. Please try and get a sample of this fluid (urine) bu using non absorbant cat litter eventually he may pass a bit of urine in the tray and this then can be anaylised under the microscope to look for white cells or with a dip stick urine test.

2.) It may well be urinary crystals. Urinary crystals form in the bladder and sometimes can block the urethras so that urine can not pass through without strianingfrom Opie. This may explain the blood in the urine (which gives it a pinkish colour) Urinarty crystals can be common in cats and are easily treated via the diet they eat. But it does need confirming first by again examing the urine under a microscope to look for crystals that may have passed through. Sometimes the crystals can block the urethra completely causing Opie not being able pass any urine at all. THIS IS A EMERGENCY situation if OPie is not passing any urine at all as all the toxins from the urine become reabsorbed again as the urine is in the bladder for a longer period of time. As long as some urine is passing then Opie should be fine but the problem still needs sorting.

3 There are other ilnness that can cause this but are less common in cats so young, such as bladder abnormalaties or even tumors, but this is highly unlikely in Opies case as for 18 month he has been perfectley fine so it is more likley to be 1 or 2.

Please see a veterinary surgeon with this problem and please remember to take a urine sample with you, it speeds up the diagnosing process. HOpe this helps
