Puppy Depression?

Rating: 9

We recently got a new puppy. A white lab, approx 4-5 months old, judging by size. She was a rescue. The lady we got her from found her on the side of the road. She took the puppy to the local Vet and got her first set of shots and worm prevention. The problem is that the puppy seems very withdrawn and 'depressed'. Is there something I can do or need to do to help her acclimate to the new environment, or should I just let her come around on her own? I'm a little worried about her, she seems almost traumatized. Thanks.

Hi there, sorry to hear about your sad puppy. It is very unusual for puppies to become 'depressed', especially labradors as these are one of the most friendly and energetic breeds around. It is more likely that she is unwell.  They can also be a little subdued for a few days after a vaccination. If she is eating/drinking well, breathing ok and without vomitting or diarrhoea, you can monitor her for a couple of days and have her examined by a vet if she is no better. If she is showing any other signs like not eating, vomitting, diarrhoea, having trouble breathing etc then I suggest you make an appointment for her to see a vet as soon as possible.

I fed her some lean luncheon meat (which she loved, by the way). Just a few small bites, had no problem with eating. Had a bowel movement as soon as she got here, it was solid and normal in appearance. Seems to be breathing fairly well. To look at her, you would just think she's tired. So hopefully thats all it is. Perhaps the vaccinations have her a little sluggish. Thank you so much for your response, Deepa!
