been to the vet, was told UTI, put the cat on antibiotics for 10 days, gave a dose of buprenex at the vet to releive pain. he was fine for 2 days doing his business no pain. Started back with the howling after peeing and straining to poop. Vet gave us 6 doses of buprenex to be administered 2x a day every 12 hours. started that yesterday and he has not used his litter box since. what should i do continue with the treatment or call the vet again in the morning.

Hi there. If he has not passed urine since yesterday and is straining to urinate, this probably means he has a blocked bladder. If this is the case, then it is an emergency situation as it can very quickly lead to kidney failure, heart failure and death. I strongly suggest you take him to the vet straight away, ie as an emergency.  Many vets have an emergency sevice or will refer you to the after-hours hospital in the area. Good luck with him!

Thanks, got him in, they say he's not blocked but kept him for observation and xrays for the next 24 hrs. Maybe I panicked I don't know, but I think that if a person or animal is eating that something should be coming out the other end in some way shape or form. Thanks again.

Update on my cat's condition, I thought you might like to know what the vet found. They found nothing but had a theory about his diabetes/blood sugar. They kept him off his insulin for 24 hrs, tested his sugar after that and it was normal at 88. He was hypoglycemic - he's home now back to his chubby happy self and bathroom habits back to normal. A bizzaro occurence of his diabetes reversing itself. I was instructed to watch his diet, test his blood sugar, stay off the insulin and keep watch him for any return episodes. I have to bring him back in a week so the dr can look him over. He may not have to return to insulin shots 2x day but have to keep it on hand incase he flip flops around. Boy that was scarry. .
