Bilirunin in urine

Bremner
Bremner

Hello please can you help me, my dog Bremner has been ill approximately every 6 weeks since we bought him at 12 weeks. His first reccuring problem is lack of appetite and vommiting and diarrohea. He is very lethargic and has itchy skin. The vet thought he had a food intollerence and we have changed his diet several times. He is now on a total wheat and glten free diet and at the moment his vommititng has subsided. He has also had a long term bladder problem. From being young he has always needed to go out about once an hour but only passes small ammounts. After he was neutered he was very ill and could not shake off the effects of the anasthetic. He was unable to pass urine and needed to be cathatarised, following this he was diagnosed with struvite crystals. This was 2 months ago. Since then his urine has become deep red like red wine.I took him back to the vet thinking it was bllod but after 3 urine tests and bllod tests the vet said it was so acidic it was off the scale. He said the bilirubin was very high also. He thought there may be a liver problem but the bllod test was normal except that the white cell count was high. He once again gave him antibiotics as he said there was some kind of infection but he felt it was not a urine infection as there was no infection in his urine.Bremner has been given antibiotics at least 18 times now and he never seems to be well. He is small for his breed and thin but not skinny.I feel there is some thing wrong but the vet never investigates further.please could you let me know what you think, any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Hello sorry to hear your problems .

Bremmer has had it very rough over the period of his life , poor baby!

I think the best advice i can give you would be to seek referral to a medical Veterinary Surgeon.

General practioners can be very good at treating problems in practice but with all his problems and the time scale that he has been ill it needs to be resolved ASAP foe his sake and yours.

Medical veterinary surgeons rarely investigate numerous problems as they normally know by previous tests and consultations with your own vet what the diagnosis is likely to be. Refferral can be expensive but i can asure you that your problems and Bremmers will eventually be sorted.

I am not experienced enough (as i am a nurse) to suggest a diagnosis but i can suggest some things to help

1 - The vomiting and dirrohea can normally be managed by the diet and it does sound like bremmer has a food intolerance to certian things , it sounds like you have this undercontrol (please keep a diary of times amounts and different foods he has tried and the effects all this informstion can be very helpful when he has a flare up.

2-  The itchy skin can be allergy or parasites (again try not to use / wash bedding in strong fragrenced washing liquid, or use shake and vac etc... Please again keep a diary of things you use and flare up days for him

3 - I would probally seek more investigations via blood samples and urine samples as to why his urine is so acidic. Possibilities can be thyroid related asd cushings syndrome , hypothyroidism etc..

All that i have mentioned the medical veterinary surgeon (a specailist in medical problems ) can and will be very helpful in helping you.

Sorry i can not be of more help to you, please be honest with your veterinary surgeon , sometimes they talk in veterinary lanuage with out knowing it , please do say if you do not understand , im sure he will be more than happy to explain it in more detail. After all you are patying for his advice and he should provide it!

    Good luck
