Wild Pups

Trouble and Sassy

Hi,
My dog gave birth to 11 puppies Oct 1, 2007. I was able to find great homes for 9 of them. I have 2 left, 1 male and 1 female, and they're a bit wild. Trouble seems to be a bit worse, of course. They always stay within arms length. What can I do to get them to come to me and be more of a people person dog? Thank you.

It is very important that puppies are socialised with people during the first 3 months of their lives. This helps them cope better with living in a human world later on in life. If they have not had much contact with humans getting them to be people dogs will be a lot harder.

A good approach is to not make a huge song and dance about it. Begin by dropping bits of food for them to pick up and calmly wander away. Then after a while sit down and place some food a bit closer and then once they are happy at this distance begin to hand feed them. Do not attempt too quickly to grab at them or try and stroke them. Don't worry if this takes weeks.

It might be a good idea to seek advice from your local recommended behaviourist to see if they can help a bit more. You will have to get them used to humans so they can have their vaccinations etc.

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. It then goes on to cover different problems that commonly occur between owners and their maturing or adult dogs by discussing real case studies. TO BUY VISIT www.rosiebarclay.com
