My dog has an occasional runny poop with what seems to be blood. However a majority of the time she has a solid poop. What could be causing this problem? She's not having any other problems. Appetite is fine, energy is good.

    Hello, sorry to hear your problem soft faeces can be caused by a majority of things ;

    1 - If the blood is fresh blood this indicates inflammation of the colon and the colon can bleed as a result of this, fresh blood is a better symptom than old black tarry blood.

    2. _ dietry related, if you are changing Patsis food on a regular basis then this can cause soft faeces or even Vomiting or dirrohea. It is best to stick to a high quality food and dry is better as dry contains less water so slow guts have less to absorb in the time food enters the digestive system to when it leaves. Feed the same diet all of the time , even certian treats or family members sneaking them food that they can not tolerate well can cause this.

    3 - A illness called gastroenteritis can cause this , this is where the intestines are very reactive with food passing through it and inflammation is present.

    Hills do a really good food for dietry related problems and intestinal problems called 'D/D' or SPD it is a prescription diet and can be expensive but will certainly sort out the problem.

    4- Please bear in mind that as animals ages they can develop certain intestinal problems un known to you. Please take her to the vet for a health check so that he may examin her abdomen for any lumps or bumps , purely to rule this out.

    5 - In the mean time starve Patsi for 24 hours (please allow water all of the time , this will empty her digestive system of everything, basically starting from a clean slate and feed her chicken or fish or rice for 3-4 days

    Once you are on day 3 of feeding the chicken introduce slowly her normal food to wean her back on.

    If me and you ate mc donalds for a week then ate salads straight after for another week our intestines would be crying out HELP! and we would certianly have soft feaces or Dirrohea.

    6 - A simple blood sample can be performed to check her blood values such as kidney and liver functions . If these all come back normal then at least you know she is fit and well.

    7- Please make sure she is regually wormed against round worm and tape worm. PArasites that live in the intestines can cause Dirrohea - a worming tablet normally about £3 each (per 10kg body weight) can sort this pronblem out.

    Any more problems or if i can be more of a halp please contact me again xx
