appetite

Rating: 8

My female dog has recently lost her appetite. She is a 13 year old Llhasa Apso. She has never been fixed. I received her 4 years ago from a woman who wanted to "move on with her life" without the dog. Cookie is simply adorable and has been perfect for my household. She has always slept on my bed ( or sometimes my daughter's) but she started wetting the bed after losing her appetite. I had her to the vet and he said she had a urinary tract infection and gave her antibiotics. She went again last week and he said she is okay but she still isn't eating right. Also, I think she's drinking more, he didn't seem concerned. Any ideas?

I am sorry to hear about cookies problems

When was cookie last in heat? I get concerned about unspayed patients getting a uterus infection called a pyometra. Symptoms arising from this usually occur a month or so after their last heat but could potentially occur at any time. So this is somethign that you should question your vet about, it can be diagnosed by a combination of blood work, xrays and or ultrasound.

Other possibilities could be the antibiotics making her appetite go down a little but I would expect her drinking to still be normal.

She really should be rechecked over by your vet because an untreated pyometra can make them very very sick and usually necessitates surgery to remove the uterus and ovaries.

Let me know how she gets on.
