Childrens' b

My whippet is 18 months old and is very curious. Today I think he got into something and around his eyes are pink and puffy and he is starting to have raised splotches and is itching. Sounds like an allergic reaction to something. I do not live near a vet and it is night time...can I give him some children's liquid benedryl? would it hurt him?

Hi there......this certainly does sound like he has had an allergic reaction to something. Firstly, please check he is breathing ok as allergic reactions can cause the airways to swell.  If the only signs are the skin signs and you are unable to get to a vet, benedryl may help.  The reccomended dose for dogs is 1-2mg/kg 2-3 times a day.  Benedryl is a human medication and using it in dogs is off liciense use, and for this reason I cannot reccomend an amount, nor can I assure you that there will be no side effects.  However, side effects (apart from mild sedation) are unlikely if you use the dose I mentioned.
